Everything You Need To Know About How To Care For Your Expensive Clothes

Would you agree that your clothing is one of the most important investments in your wardrobe? If so, then there’s a good chance that the clothing you’re currently wearing is not the best option for you.

Most people don’t realize this, but your clothing is one of the most expensive things you will ever buy in your entire life. And so you definitely shouldn’t be throwing away your clothes after a couple of years. In fact, you should be investing in some good quality clothing that will last you years and years on end.

After you have worn your clothing for a couple of years, you usually start to notice certain signs of wear and tear. For example, your shirt might start showing signs of creases, while your pants might start having frayed pockets and stains.

In this article, I’m going to share with you exactly how you should be taking care of your expensive clothes.

So if you want to learn exactly how you should take care of your clothing, then read on...

Don't wash as frequently

Reduce the amount of times you wash your clothes, if at all possible. Washing shortens the lifespan of the fibers by causing mechanical harm to them. On the other side, dry washing causes chemical deterioration. Of course, this statement does not apply to workout clothing, undergarments, socks, or people who are exposed to dirty, hot, or humid conditions.

Use a fabric freshener spray, hang the garments by a window, or hang them in a steamy bathroom if the clothing isn't unclean and simply needs a little boost.

It is essential to wash new clothing first before wearing it to remove any manufacturing-related chemicals. It is preferable to leave old garments and unusual materials like tulle to the professionals.

Sort first

The majority of us are aware that separating brightly colored apparel from white and neutral-colored clothing will help keep the color from smearing and running. The delicates category contains lingerie and softer materials like satin and silk, whereas the non-delicates category includes heavier cotton and denim.

This will stop excessive friction from causing zippers and bulkier garments to harm the delicate ones. The delicate wash cycle should be used to wash delicates on their own, or they can be put in a mesh wash bag first.

Understand the wash care labels

The majority of clothing—if not all—comes with a wash care label sewed to the item. In order to extend the lifespan of your clothing, they offer instructions on how to wash, bleach, dry, iron, and dry clean it appropriately.

Then, to reduce color loss and abrasion, turn your clothing inside out before washing. Similar to this, avoid filling your washing machine more than suggested because this will prevent thorough cleaning. Finally, if you don't have any very dirty clothes or difficult stains to remove, using cold water and hand washing are the gentler cleaning techniques.

Skip the dryer

For those of us who are short on time, using the dryer is a good way to quickly dry our clothes. However, excessive heat and friction can potentially damage the fibers in our garments, resulting in shrinkage and a shorter lifespan. Here, air drying works well.

Iron properly

Again, the wash care label should be your guide when ironing. Always err on the side of caution when it comes to temperature, especially with synthetic fibers. As an alternative, steam irons are excellent for removing wrinkles. Hanging the clothing in the restroom while taking a hot shower is another way to achieve the same effect.

Get the right hangers

Your best options would be padded or substantial wooden hangers (like those found in hotel rooms). Because of the width, there is greater weight distribution, which reduces sagging and the unattractive lines that a thin, wiry hanger leaves behind.

Nevertheless, not everything must be hung. For example, it is best to leave a heavy knit sweater folded to minimize stretching. Additionally, there are hangers made just for pants.

Use mothballs and dehumidifiers

Although mothballs may appear to be a remnant from your grandparents' and parents' closets, they actually serve a useful purpose in warding off insects that will eat your clothing. These days, you can buy perfumed mothballs that also double as wardrobe fresheners. Some bugs can also be repelled by cedar wood blocks and lavender sachets. A wardrobe dehumidifier should be kept on hand, and the batteries should be changed periodically. These will aid in preventing the growth of mold.

Store your clothes properly

To begin with, never use the dry cleaners' offered clothing bags since they trap moisture that promotes the formation of mold. Instead, use clothing storage bags made of muslin or other materials that are touted as allowing the fabric to breathe. Have the clothing folded and place it in vacuum-sealed bags for long-term storage. This will keep everything organized and compactly stored. Alternatively, you can first wrap each item in a piece of acid-free tissue paper.
